Mine’s got straight pipes on it and whoever owned it before me restricted the pipes up at the engine with some sort of chokes they made.I’d like to get up to the twin cities sometime for that show you mentioned. I may be up there in mid August for the Rattle My Bones scooter rally.

great looking bike but im going to be honest you’ll never get her dialed in with out some sort of muffler which sucks because the open pipes sound the best

Generally true but NOT in this case! Can’t see too well in the video but I pulled out an old timer trick and welded up flat washers into the the ends of the straight pipes. From there I had more than enough back pressure to tune and adjust the bike.Simple as that. Dig it.

you know after i posted that I thought about the washer trick, never tried it before but im building a bobber using the shorty mufflers and thought about doing the washer for the sound and price. What year is this xs?

This is a 73 xs650 w/ 81 front end. Pipes are stock 2/2 hack sawed under the pegs. The washers did quiet it down just a little but more importantly, the pretty much solved most of my backfire problem. For the price and effort, it was the perfect solution to this kind of project. If I could change anything, I’d maybe clamp on a couple chain link fence posts to what I’ve got and paint em black. It would look crazy and sound even better.
